COE places 22 districts under green alert as rainfall increases flooding risk
Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) on Wednesday placed 22 provinces and the National District under a green alert due to the risk of urban flooding and rising water levels in rivers, streams and ravines following recent and forecast rainfall.
The alert was issued in response to a trough affecting several levels of the troposphere. The system is expected to produce locally moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and occasional strong wind gusts, particularly from Thursday.
The areas under alert are San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo, La Vega, Barahona, San Pedro de Macorís, Pedernales, Azua, Peravia, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Santiago, Valverde, Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi, La Altagracia, Espaillat, La Romana, Independencia, Bahoruco, San José de Ocoa and Monseñor Nouel, as well as the National District.
The COE urged residents to monitor official weather updates, review their family emergency plans and avoid crossing rivers, streams and ravines or traveling through flood-prone areas.
In case of an emergency, authorities advised the public to contact the 9-1-1 National Emergency and Security System.
A green alert means residents should remain informed and prepared for possible changes in weather conditions.
