Abinader inspects construction of major drainage system on Luperón Avenue

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader oversaw construction of a major stormwater drainage project on Gregorio Luperón Avenue in Santo Domingo, aimed at reducing flooding along the busy thoroughfare.

Funded through the renegotiated Aerodom contract, the project includes an underground tunnel nearly three kilometers long, five meters in diameter, and more than 10 meters deep. The system will carry rainwater from the surface directly to the Caribbean Sea in the Manresa area.

Public Works Minister Eduardo Estrella said the project will improve drainage along Luperón Avenue and connect with surrounding areas, including parts of Herrera and Anacaona Avenue. Construction is being carried out on several fronts using specialized machinery to excavate the tunnel, with completion depending on the ground conditions encountered.

The first phase covers the area between Plaza de la Bandera and the waterfront promenade, while a future phase could extend the system to other parts of the capital.

The government says the project is part of broader efforts to improve stormwater management in Greater Santo Domingo, reduce flooding, and minimize its impact on traffic and daily activities.
