Abinader to address Haiti border security as Dominican Republic reinforces southern frontier
Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader will address the security situation along the Dominican-Haitian border during the government’s Weekly Agenda meeting this Monday at 3:00 p.m., two hours earlier than its usual schedule.
Abinader will be accompanied by Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, and military commanders overseeing border security.
The meeting comes as Haiti faces renewed security concerns following the kidnapping of four Salvadoran military technicians by gangs, prompting Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to deploy a military contingent to rescue them.
Abinader said the Dominican Republic has reinforced its southern border, where about 11,000 personnel are deployed. He added that two additional battalions, along with heavy equipment and artillery, have been sent to the area.
“We have over-reinforced the southern border” to ensure the country’s safety, Abinader said, emphasizing that protecting the Dominican Republic is his responsibility.
During Monday’s meeting, the president is expected to review border security measures and the Dominican government’s response to the worsening situation in Haiti.
