Luis Abinader awards Roberto Álvarez Order of Merit for diplomatic service

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader awarded former Foreign Minister and Ambassador Emeritus Roberto Álvarez the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella, in the grade of Grand Cross Silver Plaque, recognizing his more than three decades of public and diplomatic service.

During a ceremony at the National Palace, Abinader highlighted Álvarez’s contributions to strengthening Dominican diplomacy and international relations during his tenure as foreign minister from 2020 to 2026. He also praised his efforts to professionalize the foreign service and strengthen the diplomatic career.

Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó read Decree No. 646-26, which grants the distinction in recognition of Álvarez’s contributions to defending national sovereignty, promoting democracy and human rights, and strengthening the country’s international relations.

The decree also recognizes reforms implemented during his administration to modernize the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, improve institutional structures, and strengthen the efficiency, transparency, and training of diplomatic and consular personnel.

Upon receiving the award, Álvarez thanked Abinader for his support and highlighted diplomatic efforts before the United Nations Security Council to secure international backing for a security force in Haiti. He urged countries committed to the mission to deploy the force and provide the resources needed to restore security and institutional stability.

Álvarez also defended a foreign policy based on national sovereignty, democracy, human rights, and international law. He highlighted improvements in the conditions of diplomatic personnel, including salaries, medical coverage, and rotation programs.

The ceremony also included a tribute to Álvarez’s diplomatic career by journalist and diplomat Aníbal de Castro, who highlighted his work with the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, as well as his commitment to public service.
