Fitch raises Dominican Republic’s sovereign credit rating to BB

Santo Domingo.- Fitch Ratings has raised the Dominican Republic’s long-term sovereign credit rating from BB- to BB, maintaining a stable outlook, citing the country’s solid macroeconomic fundamentals, resilient fiscal and external accounts, and progress in economic policy.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy welcomed the upgrade, saying it reflects the government’s efforts to preserve macroeconomic stability, strengthen public finances, and sustain economic growth despite global challenges.

Fitch raised its 2026 growth forecast for the Dominican Republic from 3.5% to 4.5%, above the 3.5% median for BB-rated countries. It expects growth to remain around 4.5% in 2027 and 2028, supported by tourism, exports, construction, and recovering investment.

The agency also cited the government’s June 2026 Anti-Crisis Plan, which includes measures to strengthen public revenues and fiscal sustainability. Fitch said these actions supported the removal of a previous negative adjustment related to structural factors and reflected improvements in governance.

Fitch projects central government debt at 47.9% of GDP at the end of 2026, below the 52.5% median for BB-rated countries. It also expects the current account deficit to narrow to 1.2% of GDP, supported by tourism, exports, remittances, and foreign direct investment.

The agency additionally raised the country ceiling to BB+, citing greater exchange-rate flexibility and fewer restrictions on foreign-exchange transfers.

The government said it will continue focusing on fiscal sustainability, prudent debt management, and policies aimed at strengthening investor confidence and long-term economic growth.
