Dominican Republic reports 76 new cases of dengue

The Ministry of Public Health reported 76 confirmed dengue cases during epidemiological week 42, from October 18 to 24, bringing the year-to-date total to 556.

The institution indicated in its epidemiological bulletin SE-42 that the incidence rate is 6.24 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

“The Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) epidemiological bulletin shows that the Dominican Republic is among the countries in the Americas with the lowest incidence of dengue, registering 556 confirmed cases, a figure considerably lower than that reported by countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador. This puts the country in a favorable position within the regional epidemiological context,” he stated.

Regarding malaria, two new cases were confirmed, bringing the year-to-date total to 140 cases, significantly lower than the 842 cases recorded during the same period in 2025, an approximate 82 percent reduction. The annual incidence rate stands at 1.57 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, showing a downward trend and indicating it is under control.

The bulletin also shows that no new cases of leptospirosis were confirmed, while the year-to-date total remains 297 cases, up from 154 last year. The incidence rate is 3.33 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and its current trend reflects a sustained decline, while cholera remains at zero accumulated cases this year.

Respiratory illness and viral circulation indicate that Influenza-like Illness (ILI) remains low and stable, below expected levels. Non-subtypeable Influenza A coexists with low-level detections of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Influenza A(H3N2), and respiratory syncytial virus.

Maternal and infant mortality

Regarding maternal deaths, five fatalities were reported, corresponding to three Dominican women and two Haitian women, bringing the total to 133 deaths (71 Dominican, 59 Haitian, and three of other nationalities). This represents a reduction from 155 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025.

In the case of infant deaths, 32 were recorded, bringing the total to 1,623 deaths so far this year. They also indicate that they continue to intensify hospital monitoring and follow protocols to reduce risk factors in maternal and neonatal care services.
