Víctor Atallah officially installed as president of the World Health Assembly
Geneva, Switzerland.- The Dominican Republic has been elected to preside over the 79th World Health Assembly, marking a significant milestone for the country’s international leadership in public health.
Public Health Minister Víctor Atallah was unanimously chosen during the opening plenary session held in Geneva, Switzerland. His election places the Dominican Republic at the helm of the World Health Organization’s highest decision-making body for the next year.
The World Health Assembly brings together representatives from WHO member states to set global health priorities and adopt policies on issues such as disease prevention, health financing, and equitable access to healthcare. Atallah’s appointment comes at a critical time as countries work to strengthen health systems and prepare for emerging global health challenges.
The designation enhances the Dominican Republic’s international standing and reflects its growing influence in multilateral health forums. During the same session, member states also elected the Assembly’s vice presidents and the officers who will lead its main committees.
