Abinader announces restoration plans for historic Agua y Luz Theater

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican government will begin the bidding process for the restoration of the historic Agua y Luz Theater, a project aimed at transforming the long-abandoned venue into a modern cultural and tourist attraction in Santo Domingo.

The announcement was made during a luncheon hosted by President Luis Abinader with representatives of the Dominican artistic community at the National Palace.

Tourism Minister David Collado said the president authorized the launch of the bidding process, which will include the theater’s restoration, remodeling, and installation of a roof to allow events to continue during adverse weather conditions.

Collado explained that the administrative process is expected to take approximately three months before construction can begin. Once completed, authorities plan to immediately sign the contract and start the renovation work.

During the meeting, Abinader recalled visiting a theater in Nashville, Tennessee, before becoming president, where country music performances inspired his vision of creating a similar permanent venue for Dominican artists and cultural events.

According to Collado, the government aims to turn the Agua y Luz Theater into a vibrant entertainment and tourism hub similar to venues that combine live performances with cultural experiences. The project is expected to be developed in coordination with tourism and cultural institutions to strengthen Santo Domingo’s artistic and nightlife offerings.
