Abinader attends Shield of the Americas meeting alongside regional leaders

New York.- President Luis Abinader participated Tuesday in a meeting of the Shield of the Americas initiative, led by U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside other leaders and representatives from countries across the Western Hemisphere. The meeting took place as part of Abinader’s agenda during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Before the meeting, Abinader spoke informally with regional leaders including Chilean President José Antonio Kast, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, Argentine President Javier Milei, Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz and Peruvian political leader Keiko Fujimori. The leaders exchanged greetings and took photographs before the formal session began.

The Shield of the Americas is a regional security initiative focused on strengthening coordination and cooperation against drug trafficking, cartels and transnational organized crime. The Dominican Republic participated in the initiative’s first summit in Miami in March, where Abinader joined other leaders in signing a proclamation related to the creation of a regional coalition against drug cartels.

Abinader was accompanied in New York by Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó. His participation in Tuesday’s meeting forms part of a broader international agenda that includes bilateral meetings and discussions on cooperation, trade, investment and development.

Abinader to address UN General Assembly

Abinader is scheduled to address the 81st UN General Assembly today, one of the main events on his New York agenda. Later in the evening, he is expected to receive the Gold Insigne of the Americas Society, becoming the first Dominican head of state to receive the organization’s distinction, according to the Dominican Presidency.
