Abinader receives Google Cloud president for Latin America

Santiago de los Caballeros.- President Luis Abinader met with Eduardo López, president of Google Cloud for Latin America, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential House in Santiago de los Caballeros, highlighting the technology company’s interest in the Dominican Republic’s digital transformation.

During the meeting, attended by the Minister of the Presidency, Abinader presented the government’s progress in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure and technological institutions, including the Digital Agenda 2030, the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, and the National Framework for Interoperability and Data Governance.

López reaffirmed Google’s interest in the Dominican Republic, describing it as a dynamic economy with significant regional potential. He also highlighted the country’s progress in technological modernization and expressed the company’s willingness to support initiatives developed within the Dominican Republic’s institutional framework.

Dominican Republic expands role as digital connectivity hub

López noted that the Dominican Republic has become an important part of Google’s regional infrastructure strategy.

In February 2026, Google announced its Americas Connect initiative, which includes three new submarine cable systems with direct connections to the Dominican Republic, as well as a new branch of the Firmina cable. The projects are expected to strengthen the country’s digital connections with Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe.

Google’s initiatives in the Dominican Republic also include digital talent training, support for public education and technical collaboration with government institutions.

The meeting forms part of the Dominican government’s engagement with major global technology companies as it seeks to attract investment, expand digital infrastructure and advance the digital transformation of the State.
