Abinader tours Cibao Airport expansion as first phase reaches 90% completion

President Luis Abinader toured the construction site of the new terminal at Cibao International Airport in Santiago, where he reviewed progress on the airport’s expansion and modernization project.

During the visit, airport officials briefed the president on the project’s design, construction progress and the work completed so far.

Abinader highlighted the airport’s role in connecting the Cibao region with international destinations, particularly major cities in the United States. He said the expansion will increase the airport’s capacity and support the region’s tourism and economic development.

The new terminal is expected to double the airport’s current passenger capacity of approximately 2.3 million travelers, strengthening air connectivity from Santiago.

The first phase of the project represents an investment of more than US$200 million. According to airport administrator Teófilo Gómez, the structural and unfinished construction work for this phase is 90% complete, keeping the project on track for completion by mid-2027.

Gómez said the expansion will significantly increase the airport’s operational capacity and allow it to respond to growing passenger demand.

Abinader was accompanied by members of the Cibao International Airport’s board of directors, airport officials and representatives of the country’s aviation sector.

The expansion is expected to strengthen Santiago’s position as an important air connectivity hub for the northern region and facilitate continued growth in tourism and passenger traffic.
