Authorities explain water discoloration near Puerto Plata cruise terminal

Puerto Plata.- Authorities in Puerto Plata clarified the temporary change in water color observed in San Felipe Bay, after images of the phenomenon circulated on social media.

According to the explanation, the discoloration was not caused by an oil spill or pollutant discharge from the cruise ship. Instead, it resulted from the disturbance of sediments on the seabed by the force generated by the vessel’s propellers during docking and departure maneuvers.

Authorities explained that this is a physical phenomenon that can occur during the operation of large vessels. Once the maneuvers are completed and water movement decreases, the fine sediments gradually settle back onto the seabed and the water returns to its normal appearance.

The entity reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable port operations in Puerto Plata.
