Authorities mobilize to remove sargassum from Barahona beaches
Barahona.- Authorities in Barahona have launched a coordinated operation to remove sargassum from several coastal areas as large quantities of the seaweed continue to wash ashore, raising concerns about its impact on the environment and local tourism.
Provincial Governor Oneida Féliz Medina announced that the cleanup effort will take place Thursday beginning at 7:00 a.m., with support from multiple public and private institutions. A coordination meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at the Provincial Government headquarters to organize logistics, allocate responsibilities, and present the resources available for the operation.
Officials aim to ensure an effective response to the growing accumulation of sargassum along the province’s coastline. The phenomenon has affected beaches and generated concern among tourism operators, businesses, and residents due to its environmental, aesthetic, and economic consequences.
Féliz Medina emphasized that collaboration between government agencies, private organizations, and community groups will be essential to mitigating the effects of the seaweed influx and preserving the attractiveness of Barahona’s coastal areas. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing joint actions to address a challenge affecting much of the province’s shoreline.
