Banreservas honors Minerva Mirabal’s centenary with art exhibition

Santo Domingo.- The Banreservas Cultural Center in Santo Domingo has opened the exhibition “A Century: The Artistic Dimension of Minerva Mirabal,” a tribute that highlights the lesser-known creative side of the Dominican heroine on the centenary of her birth.

Organized in collaboration with the Mirabal Sisters Foundation, the exhibition presents for the first time a broad collection of Minerva Mirabal’s artistic work, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and personal items that reflect her passion for art, justice, and freedom.

During the inauguration, Franklin Soriano, Vice President of Communications and Social Responsibility at Banco de Reservas, emphasized the institution’s commitment to showcasing Mirabal not only as a political and historical figure, but also as an artist whose work reveals a deep sensitivity and connection to the visual arts.

The exhibition, previously presented in Santiago, is now on display at the Ada Balcácer Gallery of the Banreservas Cultural Center in Santo Domingo through August 9. Visitors can explore 16 works created by Minerva Mirabal, alongside nine pieces by Dominican artists including Miguel Núñez, Pedro Pascual, Virgilio García, and Radhamés Mejía.

The initiative also features guided tours, lectures, and educational activities designed to deepen public understanding of Mirabal’s artistic contributions. Her daughter, Minou Tavárez Mirabal, expressed gratitude for the project, noting that it honors the legacy of those who helped strengthen democracy and human rights in the Dominican Republic.

Curated by art critic Abil Peralta and museum specialist Guadalupe Casasnovas, the exhibition offers a new perspective on one of the country’s most influential historical figures, highlighting the artistic dimension of a woman whose legacy extends beyond her role in the struggle for freedom and democracy.
