Cabo Rojo International Airport to boost southern Dominican economy

Santo Domingo.- The forthcoming Cabo Rojo International Airport is poised to become a vital catalyst for the economic and tourism transformation of the Dominican Republic’s southern region, civil aviation officials announced. The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) confirmed it is actively procuring state-of-the-art aeronautical equipment and onboarding specialized personnel to ensure the new terminal is fully operational to meet projected regional demand.

Speaking on the morning news show Hoy Mismo, broadcast Monday through Friday on Color Visión (Channel 9), IDAC Director General Igor Rodríguez Durán highlighted that Cabo Rojo will serve as the nation’s ninth international airport. Developed through a public-private trust framework under President Luis Abinader’s regional development initiative, the facility is designed to significantly enhance national air connectivity and unlock long-dormant business opportunities across the south.

Construction on the main runway is progressing rapidly and will feature a modern, high-grade lighting system. To guarantee top-tier operational safety and efficiency, the terminal will be equipped with advanced aeronautical technology, including a modern control tower with cutting-edge communication suites, primary and secondary radar systems integrated with ADS-B technology, a VOR/DME distance measuring navigation system, an automated meteorological observation station, and robust backup power supply systems.

To support the expanded airspace capacity, IDAC, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Administration, has launched a competitive civil service recruitment drive to train and onboard 50 new air traffic controllers.

Once operational, Cabo Rojo International Airport is expected to generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, driving sustained economic activity and establishing the southern coast as a major destination for international travel.
