Cedimat performs the country’s first coronary intravascular balloon lithotripsy procedure
The Center for Diagnosis and Advanced Medicine and Medical Conferences and Telemedicine (Cedimat) performed the first coronary intravascular balloon lithotripsy procedure in the Dominican Republic, incorporating an innovative technology to treat severely calcified coronary lesions.
The procedure was led by Carlos García Lithgow, coordinator of Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology at Cedimat, along with a highly specialized multidisciplinary team, marking a new milestone in cardiovascular care in the country.
Intravascular coronary lithotripsy uses pressure waves to modify the calcium accumulated in the wall of the coronary arteries, allowing for better expansion of the balloon and stent during the procedure.
This technology, according to Cedimat, facilitates safer procedures, optimizes clinical outcomes, and expands treatment possibilities for patients with complex coronary artery disease, especially those with severely calcified arteries.
García Lithgow highlighted that the incorporation of this technology represents an important advance for interventional cardiology in the country.
“Calcified coronary artery disease is one of the biggest challenges during interventional procedures. Intravascular lithotripsy allows us to modify calcium safely and effectively, optimizing stent implantation and improving the prognosis for our patients,” the specialist explained.
