Citizen security Homicide rate falls to 7.16, marking one of its lowest levels in decades

The National Police assured that the results of the prevention, prosecution, and intelligence strategies developed by the Joint Task Force continue to be reflected in the citizen security indicators, with the country registering an accumulated homicide rate of 7.16 per 100,000 inhabitants as of May 29, 2026, consolidating a sustained trend of reduction of this crime in recent years.

According to the 150th weekly crime statistics report, the homicide rate for May was 6.43, while the cumulative rate for the current year reached 7.16, one of the lowest figures recorded in recent decades.

The report highlights that 27 of the 34 territories analyzed maintain single-digit homicide rates, including one with no recorded homicides, while only seven have double-digit rates. This means that 79.4% of the country’s territories have a rate equal to or lower than 9.99 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

The data shows a progressive and sustained reduction in homicidal violence. In May 2023, the cumulative rate stood at 12.77; it subsequently decreased to 10.05 in 2024 and 8.40 in 2025. By May 2026, the indicator had decreased again to 7.16, representing a 14.76% reduction compared with the same period the previous year.

Furthermore, the comparative analysis shows that between 2023 and 2026, the cumulative homicide rate decreased by 43.93%, reflecting the impact of the comprehensive actions implemented by the Joint Task Force under the coordination of the State security agencies.

These results reflect the strengthening of preventive operations, intelligence work, focused pursuit of crime, and coordinated work between the National Police, the Armed Forces, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and other institutions that make up the national citizen security strategy.
