COE places 3 provinces on yellow alert as heavy rain and storms expected

Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) placed three provinces on yellow alert and 13 provinces, including the National District and Greater Santo Domingo, on green alert as a trough continues to generate high humidity and atmospheric instability across the Dominican Republic.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), the conditions are expected to produce locally heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, wind gusts and possible hail during the afternoon, particularly in northern and northeastern provinces, the eastern plain, the Central Mountain Range and the border region.

Provinces under alert

Yellow alert: La Vega, Puerto Plata and Espaillat.

Green alert: National District, Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Monseñor Nouel, San Juan, Duarte, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Santiago, Dajabón, Elías Piña and Santiago Rodríguez.

The COE urged residents in affected areas to remain attentive to official weather updates and take precautions, particularly in locations vulnerable to flooding or sudden rises in water levels.

INDOMET also warned of locally higher waves and reduced visibility along both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts due to downpours, thunderstorms and wind gusts. Operators of small, fragile and medium-sized vessels are advised to exercise caution while navigating.

Authorities also urged the public to avoid crossing rivers, streams and ravines with elevated water levels and to refrain from using beaches in provinces under alert while unstable weather conditions persist.
