Colonial City completes RD$61.5 million street rehabilitation project

Santo Domingo.- Tourism Minister David Collado delivered the renovated Colón Street and northern and southern sections of Hostos Street in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City as part of the government’s Priority Street Rehabilitation Plan.

The RD$61.5 million project covered Colón Street between Vicente Celestino Duarte and Fuerte del Ángulo, as well as sections of Hostos Street between Padre Billini, Arzobispo Meriño and José Gabriel García streets.

Collado said the works are part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure, pedestrian and vehicle mobility, drainage systems and the preservation of the historic area.

The project included new sidewalks and paving, improvements to stormwater drainage, street furniture, lighting and utility infrastructure, signage and landscaping. Colón Street also received cobblestone paving, benches, bollards and new planters, while sections of Hostos Street were upgraded with concrete slabs, tiles and ceramic brick sidewalks.

Collado said the final phase of street interventions in the Colonial City is expected to be completed in December. Once the remaining projects under the second stage of the Inter-American Development Bank program are finished, no additional street closures are expected.

The minister also highlighted other investments in the historic district, including the restoration of monuments, churches and museums, as well as a program to repair more than 100 homes and improve facades in surrounding neighborhoods.
