Colonial City restoration aims to preserve heritage and tradition
Santo Domingo.- The Comprehensive Program for Tourism and Urban Development of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo (Pidtuccsd) reported that the ongoing renovation works in the Colonial City are expected to be completed by October and officially delivered in December, in line with the established schedule.
During a tour of the area with journalists, authorities highlighted the advanced progress of multiple restoration projects, including streets, historic buildings, religious temples, cultural centers, and residential structures. The improvements aim to enhance the visitor experience in the Colonial City, recognized as the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, founded in 1502.
Architect Amín Santos, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, explained that the renovation is being carried out under the Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program for Santo Domingo. He noted that more than 28 projects are currently underway, designed to be completed within an 18-month execution period.
Santos added that the revitalization process, which began in February 2023, is now 86.8% complete. He also presented visual materials showing the transformation of key structures, illustrating the “before and after” results of the restoration work across streets, cultural sites, and churches within the Colonial City.
