Dominican airlines welcome Abinader’s aviation fuel adjustment

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Association of Airlines (ADLA) welcomed President Luis Abinader’s decision to apply the regulated temperature adjustment to aviation fuel (avtur), describing the measure as an important step toward improving the competitiveness of the country’s aviation sector.

ADLA said the decision responds to a proposal it formally submitted in March 2025 seeking equal treatment for aviation fuel and other liquid fuels sold in the Dominican Republic.

The association also thanked Industry, Commerce and SMEs Minister Eduardo Sanz Lovatón and the ministry’s technical team for implementing the measure and including avtur in weekly fuel price announcements.

ADLA President Omar A. Chahin said the adjustment provides fairer conditions for airlines and recognizes the importance of air connectivity to tourism, trade and investment.

According to the association, liquid fuels are generally commercialized based on a reference temperature of 15°C. It said gasoline, diesel and kerosene have received adjustments for volumetric differences resulting from temperature variations, while aviation fuel had not been treated the same way.

ADLA said the change is particularly significant because fuel is one of the largest costs for airlines, especially amid rising international oil prices. Applying the adjustment means aviation fuel will be priced according to its actual volume, bringing the Dominican Republic closer to practices in other regional markets.

The association said it will continue working with authorities to ensure the adjustment is properly implemented throughout the distribution chain and ultimately reflected in costs paid by airline operators.
