Dominican authorities roll out traffic plan ahead of new school year

Santo Domingo.- The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the General Directorate of Transit and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett) are implementing measures to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety around schools ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year.

The plan will prioritize schools that experience the heaviest congestion during student drop-off and pickup times. Measures include using cones to organize traffic lanes, recommending specific routes for parents and guardians, and staggering student departures by grade level.

Authorities will also monitor temporary changes in traffic direction, encourage carpooling and the use of private transportation services, and deploy Digesett officers to schools where traffic assistance is needed.

The agencies will reinforce compliance with school-zone signage and remind drivers that the maximum speed limit in these areas is 20 kilometers per hour.

Intrant urged parents, guardians, drivers and school communities to follow traffic regulations and cooperate with authorities to ensure a safer and more orderly return to classrooms.
