Dominican government invests over RD$800 million in San Isidro Air Base upgrades
Santo Domingo.- Vice President Raquel Peña inaugurated a new control tower, upgraded runway lighting system, and horizontal markings at the San Isidro Air Base alongside officials from the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, the Airport Department, and the Dominican Republic Air Force. The project aims to strengthen operational safety and modernize the country’s aeronautical infrastructure, while positioning the base as an alternative runway for Las Américas International Airport José Francisco Peña Gómez during emergencies.
The initiative included an investment of more than RD$600 million by the aviation authority for a modern control cabin, communication systems, DVOR/DME equipment, and energy backup. Meanwhile, the Airport Department allocated RD$219 million for runway beacon and horizontal signaling systems, installed under international standards set by ICAO and the FAA. Officials highlighted that the previous lighting system had been in operation for more than 60 years and that the modernization will enhance the runway’s operational capacity for decades.
During the ceremony, IDAC director Igor Rodríguez Durán said the upgrades support connectivity, tourism, and economic growth, while outlining additional aviation projects nationwide. These include new radar systems at Cibao International Airport, replacement of outdated radar equipment at Gregorio Luperón International Airport, and the installation of ILS landing systems at Punta Cana International Airport and Las Américas Airport. Authorities also confirmed ongoing work to equip Cabo Rojo International Airport, viewed as a strategic tourism and investment hub for the southern region. Officials noted that the Dominican aeronautical sector recorded 79,693 air operations during the first four months of the year.
