Dominican Migration Institute and UN discuss joint initiatives on migration

Santo Domingo.- The Executive Director of the National Migration Institute (INM), José Benedicto Hernández, met with Julia del Carmen Sánchez, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in the Dominican Republic, and representatives of several UN agencies to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation on migration.

The meeting focused on identifying opportunities for joint initiatives and reviewing the priorities of the institute’s new administration, particularly in research, specialized training, data generation, evidence-based analysis and institutional capacity building.

Hernández said his administration aims to position the National Migration Institute as a center for knowledge, research, training and collaboration among government institutions, universities, international organizations and other stakeholders involved in migration.

He outlined five strategic pillars guiding this approach: research to understand, training to transform, innovation to modernize, cooperation to advance, and connecting knowledge with society.

Sánchez highlighted the institute’s role in addressing the challenges associated with migration in the Dominican Republic and stressed the importance of maintaining close cooperation between the INM and the United Nations.

She noted that human mobility is a cross-cutting issue affecting multiple areas of UN work and requires coordinated approaches that take into account both the country’s internal migration dynamics and its bilateral relations with other nations.

The meeting forms part of efforts to strengthen coordination among national and international institutions and promote the use of research and evidence in the development of migration policies.
