Dominican Republic and ITF partner to improve tourism transportation

Punta Cana.- The Dominican Republic has signed a cooperation agreement with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) to improve the safety, quality, and sustainability of transportation services that support the country’s thriving tourism industry.

The memorandum was signed by Tourism Minister David Collado and ITF Secretary General Stephen Cotton during the meeting of the Caribbean National Coordinating Committee.

The partnership will promote technical cooperation and the exchange of international best practices to strengthen land transportation, with a focus on drivers, transportation operators, tour guides, and other professionals who play a key role in welcoming and moving millions of visitors across the Dominican Republic each year.

The initiative seeks to raise standards in road safety, service quality, innovation, and sustainability, reinforcing transportation as an essential part of the country’s tourism experience.

“When we strengthen our transportation sector, we strengthen the entire Dominican tourism experience,” Collado said, noting that transport workers are often the first and last people visitors interact with during their stay.

The minister added that the agreement will help further professionalize the sector by adopting international standards and improving services for both workers and travelers.

During the ceremony, the ITF presented Collado with an award recognizing his leadership in promoting sustainable tourism and fostering stronger collaboration between the tourism and transportation sectors. He dedicated the recognition to the thousands of transportation workers whose professionalism and hospitality contribute to the Dominican Republic’s reputation as one of the Caribbean’s leading travel destinations.
