Dominican Republic and Suriname expand trade, tourism and education ties

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader and Suriname President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons signed a series of agreements and cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral relations in tourism, agriculture, trade, education, and international affairs during a high-level meeting in Santo Domingo.

Both leaders agreed to elevate their relationship into a strategic economic partnership and pledged to maintain regular political consultations on issues such as regional security, climate change, food security, and economic resilience. They also highlighted the importance of air connectivity, welcoming the Sky High Dominicana route linking Santo Domingo and Paramaribo as a catalyst for tourism and trade growth. Suriname further announced visa-free tourist entry for Dominican citizens holding valid U.S. or Schengen visas.

In the economic sphere, the two countries committed to expanding trade and investment opportunities, reducing barriers to commerce, and encouraging greater private-sector collaboration. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Suriname Trade and Investment Agency and ProDominicana to strengthen commercial ties. Additional agreements included cooperation in tourism promotion, agricultural development, and diplomatic education through academic exchange and training programs. Both presidents described the visit as a milestone in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to deeper cooperation and sustainable development in the Caribbean.
