Dominican Republic creates first safety inspection team for larimar mine

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Energy and Mines has created the first official safety inspection team for the larimar mine in Barahona, marking a major step toward improving safety standards in the country’s artisanal mining sector.

The newly certified team includes 18 brigade members who completed specialized technical training focused on accident prevention, emergency response, geological risk identification, and workplace safety inside and outside the mine. Officials say the initiative is designed to reduce risks, protect workers, and modernize larimar mining operations.

Training sessions covered critical support techniques, hazard detection, unstable terrain identification, and emergency preparedness. Authorities also announced stricter enforcement measures for anyone failing to comply with mine safety regulations as part of a broader effort to strengthen occupational safety standards.
