Dominican Republic establishes diplomatic ties with Somalia and expands international relations

New York.- The Dominican Republic and Somalia agreed Wednesday to establish diplomatic relations, becoming the 188th country with which the Dominican Republic maintains formal diplomatic ties.

The agreement was signed in New York by Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó and Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, through a joint statement in accordance with the Vienna Convention.

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Bisonó also signed a visa exemption agreement with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono for holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports. The agreement allows eligible citizens of both countries to enter, leave, stay, or transit through the other country for up to 30 days without a visa.

The Dominican foreign minister also held bilateral meetings with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna to review bilateral relations and opportunities to strengthen cooperation.
