Dominican Republic hosts Parlatino Special Commission on the Caribbean

Santo Domingo.- The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) formally opened a session of its Special Commission on the Caribbean at the Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Deputies, bringing regional legislators together to address challenges facing the Caribbean.

The meeting, which began Thursday and concludes Friday, is being held at the Hugo Tolentino Dipp Hall of the Chamber of Deputies.

Chamber President Alfredo Pacheco, who also serves as a vice president of the Forum of Presidents of Legislative Bodies of Central America, the Caribbean Basin and Mexico (FOPREL) and as secretary of Parlatino, highlighted the importance of the Dominican Republic hosting the session.

Pacheco described the Caribbean as a diverse region shaped by different languages, colonial histories and political institutions, noting that this diversity makes sustained parliamentary dialogue particularly important.

He argued that a permanent parliamentary forum can help maintain dialogue among countries with different legal and political traditions and facilitate the development of lasting regional agreements.

The session is expected to provide a platform for legislators to exchange perspectives and strengthen parliamentary cooperation on issues affecting the Caribbean.
