Dominican Republic investigates death of NYPD officer after cosmetic surgery

Santo Domingo.- A 31-year-old New York Police Department (NYPD) officer of Dominican origin died Sunday in the Dominican Republic after undergoing surgery to remove breast implants, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Rebecca DePaula had traveled to the country about a week earlier for the procedure. Officials have not publicly identified the clinic or the surgeon involved.

The National Police and the Public Ministry said they are awaiting the results of the autopsy and forensic examinations being conducted by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) before determining the official cause of death or whether any medical negligence was involved.

National Police spokesman Diego Pesqueira said investigators will not speculate on the cause of death until the forensic findings are complete, noting that the investigation remains open.

According to relatives, DePaula experienced complications after the surgery, including severe diarrhea, and doctors reportedly mentioned a possible bacterial infection. However, authorities stressed that these claims have not been confirmed through the ongoing forensic investigation.

DePaula served with the NYPD’s 46th Precinct and was also a pastor alongside her husband. She is survived by her husband and three children, who remain in New York awaiting the repatriation of her remains.
