Dominican Republic re-elected to UN Human Rights Council for 2027-2029
New York.- The Dominican Republic was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2027–2029 term during elections held Tuesday at the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó said the re-election reflects the international community’s confidence in the country’s commitment to human rights, democracy, the rule of law and multilateral cooperation.
Bisonó thanked UN member states for their support and said the Dominican Republic will continue working to strengthen international human rights mechanisms, promote the participation of small island developing states and address the needs of vulnerable populations.
The country served on the Human Rights Council for the first time during the 2024–2026 term, promoting initiatives focused on education, peace, disability rights, women’s economic empowerment and the protection of vulnerable groups. It also highlighted the effects of climate change on human rights and the multidimensional crisis in Haiti.
The Dominican Republic was elected alongside Brazil and Uruguay to represent the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC).
Established in 2006, the UN Human Rights Council is a 47-member intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide and addressing situations involving violations of fundamental rights.
