Dominican Republic records over 585,000 flights in last three years

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic logged 585,363 flight operations over the past three years, facilitating the movement of more than 50 million air passengers and demonstrating sustained growth in the national aviation sector, reported Igor Rodríguez Durán, Director General of the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC).

According to official sector statistics, the country recorded 212,023 flight operations in 2024 and 217,620 in 2025. As of August 2026, air traffic figures stood at 155,720 operations.

“Today, we serve as a benchmark for the entire region,” Rodríguez Durán said, citing significant state investments in modern equipment and technical training under President Luis Abinader’s administration.

The IDAC chief emphasized that civil aviation drives vital economic momentum across the country, prompting the agency to maintain strict regulatory compliance and continuous operational improvements.

Rodríguez Durán also announced that the Dominican Republic’s ninth international airport is scheduled to begin operations in 2027. Located in the municipality of Oviedo, Pedernales province, the new air terminal aims to accelerate regional development in the Enriquillo area. IDAC is currently acquiring and installing the necessary equipment to ensure high operational and safety standards ahead of the launch.

“This terminal is set to transform the lives of residents across the Enriquillo region by opening up new economic, social, and tourism opportunities,” Rodríguez Durán added. “IDAC will continue working to ensure that the expansion of Dominican civil aviation meets the highest standards of operational safety.”
