Dominican Republic renews U.S. access to Las Américas Airport and San Isidro Air Base
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has once again authorized the temporary use of Las Américas International Airport and San Isidro Air Base by U.S. aircraft and personnel as part of security cooperation agreements with the United States under the Shield of the Americas initiative.
The authorization allows the landing, parking, and overflight of U.S. aircraft under the supervision of Dominican authorities. Officials said the measure will strengthen aerial surveillance, intelligence sharing, training, and technical assistance to improve the country’s ability to combat drug trafficking, transnational organized crime, and other regional security threats.
As part of the broader agreement, the Dominican government also signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding that permits the temporary and exceptional entry of a limited number of third-country nationals who are in transit and have no criminal records.
The government is also modernizing airport and border security systems through biometric technologies and new verification tools to enhance national security and facilitate future improvements in connectivity and tourism.
