Dominican Republic reports 394 violent deaths in first four months of 2026
Santo Domingo.- Dominican authorities reported that 394 people died violently during the first four months of 2026, including 117 victims linked to common and organized crime. Among those killed were eight members of the National Police, while 93 people died in confrontations with law enforcement officers.
Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful said the remaining 184 deaths were associated with personal disputes, revenge attacks, femicides, and suicides by perpetrators. She noted that police operations have become increasingly complex as officers face heavily armed and more sophisticated criminal organizations.
Despite these challenges, Raful said authorities continue to dismantle criminal networks. The cumulative homicide rate for May stands at 7.34 per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 12.7 in May 2023, 10.05 in 2024, and 8.4 in 2025. National Police Director Andrés Cruz said officers prioritize arrests and respect for human rights, but warned they will continue confronting criminals when necessary.
