Dominican Republic sets new record for electricity demand

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) reached a new record peak electricity demand of 4,166.52 megawatts (MW) at 9:58 p.m. on July 16, Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos announced.

The new milestone surpasses the previous record of 4,077.34 MW, set on June 18, when the country exceeded the 4,000 MW threshold for the first time.

Santos attributed the increase in electricity consumption to continued economic growth, higher residential demand, and seasonal high temperatures, which have driven greater energy use across the country.

The minister said the record underscores the need to continue expanding the country’s power generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to meet rising demand. He added that the government is advancing strategic energy projects to strengthen energy security and ensure a reliable electricity supply as consumption continues to grow.
