Dominican Republic strengthens oversight of foreign healthcare credentials
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Ministries of Public Health and Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT) have signed a new resolution establishing stricter criteria and procedures for the certification of foreign academic degrees held by health professionals, with a particular focus on medical specialties and programs completed through virtual or hybrid learning formats.
The new regulations aim to ensure that healthcare professionals practicing in the country meet national quality standards in both academic preparation and practical clinical training. The resolution sets clear guidelines for evaluating foreign credentials, including requirements related to academic workload, supervised clinical experience, professional competencies, and equivalency with Dominican standards.
The measure also introduces specific provisions for degrees obtained through online or blended learning programs abroad, especially in medical specialties where hands-on clinical training is considered essential. Health Minister Víctor Atallah and Higher Education Minister Rafael Santos said the initiative strengthens oversight of healthcare practice, protects patient safety, and promotes high-quality medical services. The resolution took effect immediately upon signing and will be implemented jointly by both institutions.
