Dominican Republic takes co-presidency of global transport decarbonization coalition

Germany.- The Dominican Republic assumed the co-presidency of the ministerial declaration “Towards Resilient and Low-Emission Transport Systems for People, Development and the Planet” during the Annual Summit of the International Transport Forum in Leipzig.

The initiative, launched at COP30 in Belém, seeks to coordinate global action to decarbonize the transport sector, which accounts for more than 20% of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. Representing the country, Sara González Troncoso reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to reducing transport energy consumption by 25% by 2035 and ensuring that at least one-third of the sector’s energy comes from renewable sources and sustainable biofuels.

As co-chair, the Dominican delegation presented its 2026–2027 roadmap, which includes creating a permanent secretariat for the coalition, expanding the number of participating countries and organizations, and ensuring that transport progress is reflected in the 2028 Global Stocktake.

The move reinforces the country’s growing role in sustainable mobility initiatives. The Dominican Republic is a member of the Global Memorandum of Understanding for Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles and is advancing urban transportation projects in Santo Domingo through the Sustainable Urban Mobility Program and the MobiliseYourCity platform, which support clean bus corridors, metro expansion, and new cable car systems.
