Dominican Republic to host UN Tourism General Assembly in 2027

Spain.- President Luis Abinader highlighted the Dominican Republic’s opportunity to showcase its tourism sector and attract new investment when it hosts the 27th UN Tourism General Assembly in 2027.

During a bilateral meeting with UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Alnuwais, Abinader said the international event will strengthen the country’s position as a strategic partner in the Americas and the Caribbean while promoting its destinations, tourism experiences and efforts in sustainability and innovation.

The Dominican Republic currently chairs the UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas for a second consecutive term. It is also working with the organization on a National Tourism Sustainability Policy and Strategy aimed at incorporating sustainability criteria into the planning and development of tourist destinations.

The cooperation includes initiatives focused on air connectivity, climate resilience, technical assistance and institutional strengthening across the Caribbean.

Abinader said the country expects to receive more than 12 million visitors this year, surpassing its estimated population of 10.5 million. He attributed the sector’s continued growth to its tourism infrastructure, investment incentives, tax benefits and the Zero Bureaucracy program, which seeks to streamline administrative procedures.

The president also emphasized the role of tourism in the government’s Meta RD 2036 strategy to double the size of the national economy. He noted that tourism generates economic activity beyond hotels, airlines and cruise lines by supporting agriculture, transportation, construction, infrastructure, technical services and other industries, while creating jobs and increasing demand for Dominican goods and services.

Abinader said hosting the 2027 assembly will provide an opportunity to strengthen international alliances, share the country’s tourism experience and promote further economic and social development.
