Dominican shipping association calls for long-term national maritime strategy

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic Shipping Association (ANRD) called for a long-term national maritime vision to prepare the country for the expected growth of its economy and foreign trade.

The proposal was presented during the first Maritime Vision 2026 forum, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Convention Center, which brought together government officials, business leaders and representatives of the maritime, port, logistics and industrial sectors.

ANRD Chairman Jaak Rannik said the Dominican Republic has key advantages, including its geographic location, modern infrastructure, international connectivity, private investment and growing logistics platform.

He noted that the country has developed a dynamic port and logistics system but argued that continued economic growth requires moving from sector-specific responses toward a coordinated strategy that anticipates future infrastructure, connectivity, logistics, human capital and sustainability needs.

The forum also examined the implications of the government’s goal of doubling the size of the economy by 2036, particularly for imports, exports, manufacturing, free zones, tourism, energy and logistics.

According to the ANRD, a National Maritime Strategy would help coordinate public and private efforts while strengthening competitiveness, infrastructure, human capital and environmental sustainability.
