National District advances vital drainage project against flooding

Santo Domingo.- The National District Mayor’s Office is currently executing the initial phase of a storm drainage project, backed by the central government and boasting an investment of 230 million pesos.

This initiative targets immediate interventions in critical areas identified across the three constituencies of the National District. The primary objective is to fortify the drainage infrastructure and alleviate the risk of flooding during the rainy seasons.

Construction is underway for new filter wells, collectors, and scuppers, with an anticipated completion between April and May of this year. The project is set to benefit multiple sectors in the city, including El Rosmil, Restauradores, Renacimiento, Ciudad Moderna, San Gerónimo, La Castellana, El Millón, La Julia, La Esperilla, Don Bosco, Piantini, Ensanche Paraíso, Julieta Morales, Evaristo Morales, Los Platanitos, Ensanche Carmelita, Cuesta Hermosa I, Arroyo Hondo, La Aldaba, Ensanche Naco, Ensanche La Fe, Expreso V Centenario, Villas Agrícolas, Mercado Nuevo, El Corralito, and Centro Olímpico.

In total, these interventions encompass the construction of 265 new filter wells, 253 collectors and scuppers, 350 linear meters of sewage, and 32 new manholes.

Highlighting the efforts during Mayor Carolina Mejía’s administration from 2020 to 2023, a significant contribution was made with the construction of 173 collectors and scuppers across various city sectors, funded through the Municipal Participatory Budget (PPM).

This is very much needed in the city, but can they please also bury the power lines throughout the city (DN)?? This is LONG overdue, seriously.

The drainage project is welcome. What will be more welcome will be consistent regular maintenance and cleaning of the drainage infrastructure.

There has to be an end of build it or buy it and then forget about it attitude that is most common in the country.
