DP World Dominicana welcomes largest ship to date
Santo Domingo.- DP World Dominicana has received the MSC Marie, the largest vessel by capacity and size to ever enter the country. The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) ship, which has a cargo capacity of 17,644 TEUs and measures 366 meters long by 51 meters wide, arrived at DP World’s Punta Caucedo terminal, marking a significant milestone for trade in the Dominican Republic and the Americas.
This achievement was made possible by DP World’s $700 million investment to expand its port terminal, increasing its annual capacity from 1.4 million to 2.5 million TEUs. The expansion included extending the main dock by 450 meters and acquiring four Super Post Panamax cranes and 10 RTGs, enhancing the port’s ability to handle large cargo volumes. With a total of 32 RTGs and 10 gantry cranes, the terminal is now equipped to support the growing demand for trade.
Manuel Martínez, CEO of DP World Dominicana, highlighted that the successful handling of such large vessels reinforces the country’s potential to become the leading logistics hub in the Americas. Additionally, the MSC Marie’s arrival was carried out with a commitment to sustainability, using 100% electric equipment, aligning with DP World’s global decarbonization strategy to achieve “Net Zero Emissions” by 2050.
