Duartian Institute urges Abinader to explain reports of U.S. pressure over Cuba

Santo Domingo.- The president of the Duartian Institute, Wilson Gómez Ramírez, called on the Dominican Republic to preserve its self-determination and ensure that its foreign policy decisions are guided by national interests, international law and respect for the country’s sovereignty.

Gómez Ramírez made the remarks Sunday during a ceremony at the Pantheon of the Fatherland marking the 163rd anniversary of the Restoration War. His comments came amid the Dominican Government’s decision to withdraw nine officials from the Cuban Embassy, who were given seven days to leave the country.

The former constitutional judge said the Dominican Republic should maintain its traditional prudence in international relations and make decisions based on its own criteria. He also called on President Luis Abinader to explain reports of alleged U.S. pressure behind the decision involving the Cuban diplomats.

Gómez Ramírez stressed that the Dominican Republic’s close relationship with the United States can coexist with its sovereign right to establish its own positions toward Cuba and other countries. He said foreign policy should be grounded in international law, reciprocity, self-determination and mutual respect.

Linking his message to the historical significance of the Restoration War, he said the 1863 conflict serves as a reminder of the importance of defending the country’s political independence and ability to determine its own future.

During the ceremony, the Duartian Institute also honored the Dominicans who fought to restore national independence and expressed support for a bill seeking the exhumation of Pedro Santana’s remains from the Pantheon of the Fatherland.

The event included a floral offering, a military tribute before the Pantheon’s votive flame and the signing of its book of honor.
