EGE Haina launches Dominican Republic’s first hybrid wind-solar power plant
Valverde, DR.- EGE Haina inaugurated the Esperanza Renovable power plant in Valverde province alongside President Luis Abinader, marking the country’s first large-scale hybrid injection of wind and solar energy into the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI). The project combines the new 60 MW Esperanza Solar 2 and 49.5 MW Esperanza Wind parks with the already operational 90 MW Esperanza Solar 1, reaching a total renewable capacity of 200 MW after an investment of US$246.5 million.
The complex is expected to generate around 485,000 MWh annually through 259,370 bifacial solar panels spread across 246 hectares and 11 Vestas wind turbines, the tallest structures installed in the Dominican Republic at 225 meters high. EGE Haina General Manager José A. Rodríguez Silvestre described the project as a strategic diversification of the national energy matrix and announced plans to incorporate a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to optimize energy distribution.
Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos Echevarría highlighted the project’s importance for strengthening the country’s energy security and accelerating the transition toward renewable energy. With the addition of Esperanza Renovable, EGE Haina increases its installed renewable capacity to 576 MW, surpassing ahead of schedule the target established in its sustainability bond.
The construction phase generated 1,400 direct jobs and is projected to prevent more than 275,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. Since 2022, EGE Haina has also invested over RD$34 million in community and environmental initiatives in Valverde, including solar energy systems for public institutions, school improvements, infrastructure works, and the creation of an arboretum with more than 1,000 endemic tree and shrub species.
