Environment Ministry announces 10 million-tree reforestation initiative

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, RD Vial, and the General Directorate for the Beautification of Highways and Ring Roads (Digecac) have announced a nationwide reforestation initiative to plant 10 million trees over the next two years.

The project aims to restore vegetation cover, enhance the landscape along major roadways, and increase green spaces across key transportation corridors.

Priority areas include the Azua Ring Road, Coral Highway, 6 de Noviembre Highway, Juan Pablo II Highway, the Duarte Highway near the North Ring Road, and Ecological Avenue, among other strategic routes.

Environment Minister Paíno Henríquez said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to bringing greenery back to the country’s highways, adding that the ministry has the capacity to support a nationwide tree-planting campaign.

A technical commission will be established to coordinate the project, define implementation strategies, and oversee its progress. RD Vial Director Hostos Rizik Lugo said the agency is prepared to begin work with the necessary personnel and resources, while Digecac Director Rodolfo Valera Grullón pledged the institution’s technical and operational support to ensure the plan’s successful execution.
