Environment Ministry launches modernization of National Botanical Garden

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has unveiled the first phase of a comprehensive modernization and institutional strengthening plan for the Dr. Rafael María Moscoso National Botanical Garden, aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing visitor services, and expanding the facility’s scientific and educational capabilities.

Among the completed upgrades are the renovation of the main entrance, restoration of the iconic domes, construction of a new security and monitoring area, installation of accessible restrooms, creation of a medical dispensary with a breastfeeding room, and the restoration of the Japanese Garden and its traditional Tea House. Officials said the improvements were designed to preserve the Botanical Garden’s ecological and scientific integrity while preparing it for future generations.

Environment Minister Paíno Henríquez described the project as an investment in conservation, environmental education, and public well-being. He also announced a second phase that will include the renovation of trails, service areas, dining facilities, and storage spaces, along with the modernization of the Botany Department, the National Herbarium, and the Aquatic Plant Pavilion.

Future plans also include the restoration of the Great Canyon through environmentally friendly ozonation technology to improve water quality, supported by a solar-powered lighting system. As the National Botanical Garden approaches its 50th anniversary, authorities say the initiative will strengthen its role as a leading center for biodiversity conservation, scientific research, and environmental education in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
