Environment Ministry rejects vehicle traffic on Puerto Plata beach

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources questioned the circulation of vehicles to Playa Encuentro, located 4 kilometers from the municipal district of Cabarete in Puerto Plata.

The official institution recalled that resolution number 68-2005 of the Ministry of Tourism ( Mitur ) prohibits the transit of motor vehicles within 60 meters from high tide.

The Environment Ministry believes that this solution requires coordinated action by the competent authorities to guarantee environmental protection, the management of the coastal space, and the safety of those who use the beach for surfing, recreational activities, and other forms of tourism.

With its pronouncements, the organization showed solidarity with a claim in that sense regarding the provisions that, according to the surf schools that operate in Playa Encuentro.

The Deputy Minister of Coastal and Marine Resources of the Environment, José Ramón López, sent a letter of solidarity to the representative of the Surf schools, Jesús Perdomo, according to El Nacional.

These schools stated that they have appealed to the Ministry of Tourism, the Mayor’s Office of Sosúa, the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett), the Tourist Police (Politur), and other entities involved in the management of the coast, without finding a solution to the problem.

López noted that Playa Encuentro is internationally recognized as one of the main surfing destinations in the Caribbean and that it is essential to guarantee the safety of athletes, visitors, and residents.

The Environment Ministry reaffirmed its willingness to intervene to solve the problem.
