FEDA and CEA launch heritage tourism project highlighting Dominican sugar industry

The Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) and the State Sugar Council (CEA) have launched a heritage tourism initiative in Hato Mayor aimed at preserving the Dominican Republic’s sugar industry legacy while creating new economic opportunities for local communities.

FEDA Director Hecmilio Galván and CEA Director Rafael Burgos Gómez toured historic sites, including the former Las Pajas Sugar Mill offices and a traditional sugar mill, to evaluate their inclusion in a future tourism route.

The proposed circuit would connect Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macorís, and Monte Plata, linking museums, former sugar mills, and other historic landmarks tied to the country’s sugar production. Plans also include restoring the Las Pajas Museum and integrating it with sites such as Porvenir, Colón, and Consuelo sugar mills, along with the Sugar Cane Museum.

Officials said the project aims to preserve more than 500 years of Dominican sugar history, boost cultural tourism, attract visitors, and generate new income opportunities for entrepreneurs and producers in sugarcane-growing communities.

Residents of Mata Palacio welcomed the initiative, expressing hope it will spur economic growth and improve quality of life in the province.
