Firefighter urges Dominicans to prepare for a potential major earthquake

Santo Domingo.- A member of the National District Fire Department is urging Dominicans to strengthen their preparedness for a potential major earthquake, citing the country’s exposure to seismic activity.

Colonel José Vicente Peña said during an interview on Reseñas, the Podcast that the island has 14 active faults. While earthquakes cannot be predicted, he stressed that families and communities should take preventive measures and be prepared for a significant event.

Peña recommended checking homes and workplaces for potential structural weaknesses, including cracks, exposed reinforcement bars and other warning signs.

He also advised families to establish an emergency plan identifying what to do and where to meet if members become separated during an earthquake.

Another key recommendation is to prepare an emergency backpack with enough supplies for at least 72 hours, including water, canned food, a radio, flashlight, batteries, clothing, medication, first-aid supplies and a whistle.

For people inside high-rise buildings during an earthquake, Peña advised against attempting to evacuate hastily. Instead, they should protect themselves from falling debris, cover their heads and move to a safe location.

The firefighter also emphasized the importance of community preparedness, noting that residents often play a crucial role during the first hours following a major emergency.
