Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez reaffirms support for Bolivia’s democratic institutions

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic on Wednesday condemned any attempt to undermine the constitutional order in Bolivia and reaffirmed its support for the democratic will expressed by Bolivian voters in the 2025 elections.

During a virtual session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez voiced deep concern over Bolivia’s political, social, and humanitarian situation. He warned that road blockades, disruptions to essential services, and violent confrontations disproportionately affect the most vulnerable sectors of the population.

Álvarez said President Rodrigo Paz and Bolivia’s current authorities emerged from a legitimate electoral process and stressed that all political and social differences must be addressed through democratic institutions rather than through coercion or attempts to break constitutional order.

The foreign minister also expressed solidarity with families affected by shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and other essential goods caused by ongoing unrest. He praised the Bolivian government’s efforts to engage in dialogue with social and productive sectors and said these initiatives demonstrate that negotiated solutions are possible when there is a genuine commitment to national stability.

Álvarez acknowledged the support provided by Argentina and other countries that have helped facilitate the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Bolivia, describing the assistance as an important example of hemispheric cooperation.

The Dominican Republic reiterated that dialogue, democratic institutions, and regional solidarity are essential to preserving stability and protecting the rights and well-being of the Bolivian people.
