From Sunday until Wednesday «we are going to have significant rainfall,» warns Indomet.
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology ( Indomet ) warned this Friday that «from the afternoon of this Sunday, May 17, a trough will affect the Dominican Republic, bringing significant rainfall.
The agency’s director, Gloria Ceballos, said that the phenomenon will affect Dominican territory until next Wednesday and could be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.
«We’ve had an atypical May. We don’t have saturated soils (but) we will have severe weather because the atmosphere is going to be very unstable,» Ceballos warned.
The expert pointed out that the warning is being issued early because, as she stated in a press conference, most Dominicans disconnect from the news on weekends, so the information helps citizens take appropriate measures.
In that regard, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) has already issued a green alert for five provinces due to possible flooding of rivers, streams, and ravines, as well as flash floods or urban flooding.
The districts on alert are Montecristi, Puerto Plata, Valverde, Dajabón, and Santiago Rodríguez.
Previously, the COE prohibited the use of rivers, streams, ravines, and bathing areas along the Nizao River and instructed nearby communities to take preventive measures due to scheduled operations at the Valdesia Hydroelectric Plant.
The provision applies specifically from the Las Barías Counter Reservoir to the mouth of the aforementioned tributary, where controlled regulation will be carried out.
